Boxes You Will Need When Moving Locally

Many Local moving companies, long distance movers, or international movers require your goods to be packed into boxes of varying sizes before they show up.

A hint for those who are moving and are in need of moving boxes: You can now get most moving boxes at Lowe’s or Home Depot at the same price as local movers get them at cost. Some specialized cartons HAVE to be purchased from moving companies or box companies.

Believe me when I say, get plenty of cartons for your move. In many cases, consumers are going back to their local mover a second time to order more boxes. Here are some different types of boxes you will need for a move:

  • Small Cartons - 1.5 cubic feet.
  • Medium Cartons - 3.0 cubic feet.
  • Large Cartons - 4.5 cubic feet.
  • Lamp Cartons - Tall cartons which hold tall standing lamps.
  • Picture & Mirror Boxes - Usually come in two pieces and then have to be scoped together.
  • Mattress Boxes - Most mattresses are fined just plastic wrapped but valuable ones should be boxed.
  • Flat Screen TV Cartons - These are a MUST. If packed right, they provide the most protection for your flat screen.
  • Self Locking Auto Folders - Used for office moves and local moves, requires no tape.
  • Dish Packs - Double walled heavy duty carton used for packing dishes and stemware.
  • Wardrobes - Holds two feet of hanging clothing. Also use these to stuff pillows and blankets into.

What You Need Before You Hire Local Movers

Do you need hanging wardrobe boxes for your hanging clothes? Some local moving companies offer free use of wardrobe boxes to their customers. Wardrobe boxes carry 2 feet of hanging clothes. You may want to take a look in your closet before contacting your local moving company to determine how many wardrobe boxes you need.

Do you need packing services? If you do not want to have to spend a lot of time on packing, then most likely your local moving companies will offer packing services. Items that you may want the local movers to pack are items like dishes, stemware, mirrors and other breakables.

Do you need packing supplies? Many local moving companies sell moving supplies such as boxes; packing paper, bubble wrap etc. for an extra charge. Some local moving companies rent boxes and some supplies. Make sure you know what you want in terms of packing materials.

    Experienced Movers

When it comes to moving my house, I surely rely on professional movers. Local movers came to my house last week to help me move all my things from Los Angeles California to San Diego California. Moving is always stressful but when you have a good plan then everything could work out smoothly.

The first thing I did was search online for local moving companies. I came across this site Movers-Moving.NET and they helped me contact local moving companies in my area. I entered my move criteria in their easy 1 minute form and in an hour or so I got a call from my first moving company. I told the movers everyting I had to move and their price quote was a little out my budget. It wasnt until I got the call from the 3rd moving company that I decided that they were the best for the job.

After carefully packing all my valuables, and procrastinating all week, the movers showed up right on time. Almost immedialty the movers got to work. It took about 4 hours to load everything on the truck and it was obvious that the movers were experienced.

We arrived in San Diego and the movers were even faster unloading and placing everything in my house. The check was signed and the movers were off. Ive had many bad experiences moving but I'm glad that this one was great. Thanks to the great website that got me in contact with the movers and thanks to the movers who did a great job. I was very pleased

    Movers Tips From a Mover

    Frontier Apartment Movers

Movers are getting a bad name when sometimes it's not the movers fault. Movers beware of home foreclosure customers. We did a move over the weekend for a young couple that was in foreclosure. They also had a room mate that was being forced out at the same time.

The customer requested a two part move which is not uncommon in our industry. We specialize in apartment moves and have smaller trucks compared to the large vanlines. The couple was also going through a divorce. The husband hired us http://www.gotmove.com/ and the wife hired another off brand moving company.

We arrived and was instructed that the husbands belongings were going to a storage facility and the room mates belongings were going to his parents home so they wanted it split into two loads. The husband was paying for the move because the room mate was out of work.

We loaded all of the husbands belongings and delivered it to storage then went back to load the room mates belongings. We were told by our customer that he would meet us at the room mates parents home when we are unloading so he could pay the invoice. When we arrived we asked the room mate to contact him so he could be here to pay. He could not get a hold of him and said his phone was left at the home.

To make a long story short. Our customer never showed up. We unloaded the entire truck except for a large Sony flat screen TV and some important parts to a luxury king size bed. We instructed the room mate that we needed to collect payment for services before we could finish unloading. He totally understood but started to panic as he thought he would get stuck without his TV and bed parts for the bill.

He decided to contact the customers mother and she came to save the day. Luckily she lived in Phoenix where the move was being performed. The customer never called or showed.

The point here is... Too many stories out there about movers holding furniture hostage for money. This is a perfect example of how some stories might get blown out into something it's not.

We as movers really need to protect our selves especially during these tough times and record foreclosures. Be sure to secure payment before all of the contents are unloaded.

Living in Alaska? Think Florida would be an ideal location to relocate to but have limited contacts there? Or maybe you simply want to move to another city in the same state but aren't getting any calls from employers in that market.

Don't fret. There are a few simple tips you can use to help you find proper employment in whatever region you are interested in.

Tip #1: Put your resume on the local job boards in the area you are interested in. It seems like a basic idea, but just saying you would relocate to an area doesn't mean you will get contacted. When recruiters/hiring manager search the resume databases they typically do not have a field that searches for where relocation will be. Most search engines simply give the option of whether the candidate is open to relocation, not specifically where to though . . .

5 Tips Designed to Help You Move

5 tips designed to help you move

By Nara Schoenberg - Chicago Tribune

. . . 1. Don’t move it if you don’t want it. “People pay a lot of money to move all the clutter they don’t want or need,” Pearse says. Instead, identify the unwanted items and get rid of them in a garage sale. If that’s too much work, consider donating the discards to a charity.

    2. Use packing material at your disposal. Save money and environmental resources by using free and recyclable packing materials. Many large supermarkets will give away boxes for free. If you have time, start hoarding newspapers and junk mail. Use the newspapers to wrap fragile items. Shred the junk mail to make a great green replacement for bubble wrap.

    3. Surf for tech help. Let someone else figure out which cable, telephone and Internet service to get at your new home. “As someone who is terrified of technology, this is my favorite tip,” says Pearse, who recommends a site created by cable companies, Cable Movers Hotline (cablemover.com). Also available is Movearoo (movearoo.com), a site offered, in part, by telephone companies.

    4. Moving advice for your possessions: If you use professional movers, pick a reputable company by means of a referral rather than an advertisement. And avoid stress by setting aside your precious knickknacks and important paperwork and moving them yourself.

    5. Start with a list. Don’t know where to start? “Take a long, hard look at each room very quietly and make a list of what has to go, what has to stay,” what has sentimental value and what doesn’t, Pearse says. Go room by room, item by item. “Once you get going, it’s very easy.”

10 Steps to Make Moving to a New Location Easier

10 Steps to Make Moving to a New Location Easier

Moving to a new location is the perfect time to thin out the house and toss unused items. Room by room go through clothes and closets and send unused items to the Goodwill or local thrift store. A good rule of thumb is that if it hasn’t been used in 6 months toss it.

Set up dates with the utility companies both in the current home and in the future home. Make sure they know when to turn power on and off so that the family is not inconvenienced.

Hire movers. Families can make moving much easier on themselves if they hire movers to the heavy lifting of furniture and boxes. Some moving companies offer packing services as well. Decide if an all inclusive mover is needed or . . .

    Hot Day Moving

    Hot Day Moving

It's the middle of summer. 105 degrees in the shade. And you have a 4 bedroom house to move. Sounds like a tough day for everyone, especially the movers.

A good idea is to provide your movers plenty of liquids - water, gatorade, juice, etc. An ice chest with a bottomless supply of cold liquids is a good idea. No alcohol of course.

Not only will this make your movers more productive and sustainable through the entire day, but the gesture will be greatly appreciated.

A grateful and well hyrdrated mover is your best bet for a successful move in the dog days of summer.

Office Moving - What To Do With Unwanted Furniture

Let's say you have an office that needs to be moved. But you're downsizing and you won't be able to fit all of your furniture in the new place. You have a few choices.
    1. You can try to sell your extra furniture.
    2. You can put your extra furniture into storage.
    3. You can give away your unwanted furniture.
    4. You can dispose of your extra furniture at the local dump.

If you are looking to sell your furniture, good luck. There is not a big market for used office furniture and if you want to sell it begin the process well in advance of your move.

As move day approaches, if you have not been able to sell your items, contact an office furniture liquidator, and ask them to come out to see if they want your items. They may have no interest at all, but if they do they may offer you nothing other than to haul it away for you. This could be a good option, otherwise you may have to pay your movers to haul the items either to your storage, or to the dump for an extra fee.

If you are looking to put your furniture into storage you should really evaluate your estimated time in storage, the cost for that storage, and the value of the furniture. It does not do you any good to pay for 3 years of storage or maybe $10,000 of storage for $4000 of used office furniture.

Unless the furniture is high quality, high value items your best option may be to offer it for free to other tenants in your building, or your employees. This could eliminate or at least minimize any cost you might incur with having to dispose of or store these now unneeded items.

As a final option you may simply need to dispose of your furniture at the local dump. Be prepared to pay labor costs and any disposal fee for this final option.

    Good luck!

But just want all you long haul drivers to remember it's better to wait out the big storm idling away in a truck stop rather than risk getting blown off the road in a blizzard, especially if you are empty. Local Movers: A Bad Smelling Move

Local Movers : A Bad Smelling Move

About a couple years ago I witnessed one of the worst moving relocation experiences in my life. It was January and we got a lead to move an old lady from Los Angeles to San Francisco. It was a fairly light load but when we got to the house we knew we were in for a bad day.

With all our materials ready we walk in the house to realize the whole thing smelled like a dirty kitty litter box. This lady was mom to about 10 cats and never heard of lysol disinfectant spray. It took us about 4 hrs to move all the cat piss smell furniture on the truck. The whole ride up to San Francisco reaked of cat urine. I was so happy once it was all done and over except for the fact it took 3 days to get the smell out of my nostrils.

Long Distance Movers: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Long Distance Movers: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Our moving truck broke down in the middle of nowhere Interstate 5 in Oregon one cold and dreary fall afternoon in the late 70's. We had to hitchhike to the next truck stop. A volkswagon bug picked us up and with 2 guys and a backseat full of luggage. We shoehorned our way in the back and got ready for the 50 miles ride.

Not much talk going on, my right arm was stretched out under a backpack, and I felt a metal tin. I pried the top off with my fingers and immediately the aroma of chocalate chip cookies filled the crowded car. All the windows were rolled up and I was certain everyone got the whiff.

I looked around but no one seemed to notice the aroma of cookies. Then I lifted the lid again, the same aroma, but only I noticed it. I pulled out a cookie. My partner had been looking out the other window the whole while, and I elbowed him and showed him the cookie, imploring him to be quiet. Needless to say he blurted out "Hey, where did you get that cookie?" Before you know it, the guys that picked us up pulled to the side of the road and kicked us out.

Moral - Be quiet with you chocolate chip cookies.

How Much Should a Local Move Cost

How much should you expect to pay for a local movers?

Local moving costs depend upon a variety of factors including move size, services requested, access considerations (such as single story home, or 4th floor apartment with 4 flights of stairs and a 500 foot carry to the truck), and labor rates in your area.

A local move is generally considered a move of less than 200 miles. Depending upon the state in which you live will determine whether there are state regulations of not. In addition, any move across state lines is regulated by interstate regulations.

For the most part local moving is charged by the hour. Usually the consumer will pack boxes themselves and have the movers do the moving. It is not unusual for the final cost to be between $75 to $150 per room. This will depend upon how much or how little furniture and items you have in the various rooms in your home. Don't forget to count the garage and outside / patio as rooms if you have any amount of items there.

Most every moving company will also provide full carton packing services if requested. Again, this final cost will depend upon how much packing you need. The final cost to pack a standard home for a local move often can cost about the same as the cost of the move itself. This takes into account packing labor as well as packing materials.

The bottom line is the more packing and preparation you are able to do yourself, the lower you local moving cost will be. Also, to save money you can move smaller items along with boxes yourself in cars or vans or your own trucks and have the movers just move the larger furniture items.

    Good luck with your moving!
